Retaining walls
Sheet pile wall in Quebec, New Brunswick, the N.W.T. and Nunavut
JPC Consultants inc. designs sheet pile walls in Quebec City and across Quebec, to support an excavation in loose soils, in an urban area or near a body of water.
Our approach
A steel screen for safe excavation
A sheet pile wall is made of steel sections driven into the ground and interlocked with one another. They form a continuous screen that holds back soil and, often, water.
We design temporary and permanent sheet pile walls. They are used for excavations in loose soils, in urban areas or near bodies of water.
We carry out the calculations to current standards. We take into account the soils, water levels, surcharges and nearby structures.
Before the design, we compare sheet piles with other possible systems, such as the soldier pile and lagging wall (Berlin wall). You can then choose knowing how each option affects cost and construction.

Choosing well
When should you use a sheet pile wall?
Sheet piles are suited to excavations in loose soils, especially where water is present. Their continuous screen limits water inflow into the excavation.
They are also used to build a cofferdam. The sheet pile enclosure then allows work in the dry in a waterway or body of water.
Depending on the height to retain, the wall can be cantilevered or supported by anchors or struts. The choice comes from the calculations and the space available around the excavation.
Installing sheet piles requires access for machinery. From the design stage, we take into account this access, nearby structures and the construction sequence.
Applications
Uses of a sheet pile wall
Sheet piles address many job site situations. Here are the ones we design them for.
- 01
Excavations in loose soils
Supporting the walls of an excavation in sand, silt or clay.
- 02
Work near water
A continuous screen that limits water inflow into the excavation.
- 03
Cofferdams
A temporary enclosure for working in the dry.
- 04
Urban areas
Supporting excavations near existing structures.
- 05
Permanent structures
Sheet pile walls designed to stay in place.
- 06
Site inspection
Inspection of retaining walls and excavation slopes.
Our process
From site analysis to sealed plans
- 01
Site analysis
Review of soils, water levels, surcharges and nearby structures.
- 02
Choice of system
Sheet piles or another system, based on feasibility, sequence and cost.
- 03
Design and plans
Calculations, embedment depths, supports and sealed engineering plans.
- 04
Site support
Technical answers and supervision visits during the work.
Who we serve
For contractors and major projects
We mainly support contractors, for excavations and temporary methods on commercial projects and major projects.
Our retaining walls are also found on mining projects, projects for cities and communities, and private projects.

Yes. We design temporary and permanent sheet pile walls, based on the project's needs.
The choice depends on the soils, the presence of water, the depth and nearby structures. We compare the options with you before the design.
Yes. We design cofferdams, including sheet pile cofferdams, so work can be done in the dry.
